Cougars Don Special Black Jerseys in Victory Over NDCL
Last week’s varsity football game against NDCL was a monumental occasion, and not just because the Cougars defeated the Lions 17-14, notching their second straight victory in the North Coast League rivalry.
For the first time in program history, Lake Catholic sported alternate black jerseys – a surprise gifted to the players by a generous alumni group. The team was formally presented with the jerseys in a team dinner on Thursday night, with the captains entering the cafeteria in full uniform garb. After performing pregame warmup drills in their traditional green jerseys, the Cougars returned to their locker room and changed into the black jerseys, which inspired a great deal of enthusiasm among the home crowd. (Naturally, the student section happened to be celebrating a “blackout” theme.)
“I want every team to establish its own legacy, and this year’s team will always be remembered as the first in Lake Catholic history to ever don black jerseys,” head coach Marty Gibbons said. “This is something our players will remember forever – primarily because we won the game!”
