Timothy L Armelli

May 1995

Tim Armelli personifies the spirit of Lake Catholic High School. A man of multiple involvements, Tim extends himself far beyond the demands of his job as teacher, assistant football coach, and head wrestling coach; his care and concern for his students is evident both in the classroom and on the field of play. His treatment of others — always fair and respectful — has earned him respect and admiration in return. And with his unique brand of humor, he has lightened many a heart and taught many a lesson about life and laughter.

Under his leadership, Lake Catholic’s wrestling team earned the state championship in 1989, the first ever in any sport in Lake Catholic’s history. And in 1991, he was a leading force in the design and construction of Lake Catholic’s auxiliary gymnasium and wrestling facility. The success of the wrestling program — indeed of all that Tim Armelli is involved in — is due in part to his technical knowledge of the sport, but even more to his ability to motivate and to inspire. The same Christian values that guide his personal life as husband to Terri (Sraj) ’74 and father of Brian and Dan direct his professional life as well. His teaching and coaching, his enthusiastic endorsement and promotion of Lake Catholic, indeed his very living, proclaim a profound and energizing faith that shows itself in joy and generosity and continuous self-giving. As mentor and colleague, teacher and coach, friend and counselor, Tim Armelli continues to be one of Lake Catholic’s most valuable resources.

Tom Banc

May 1995

As a founding faculty member of Lake Catholic High School, Tom Banc also helped initiate a tradition of teaching excellence. Education is his passion and his gift; thus, his expertise in the classroom spilled over naturally onto the basketball court and to the football field, to the many teams he coached, and the many young people he inspired over the years. Throughout his 15-year tenure at Lake Catholic, Tom was often the first person his students turned to in times of need, so trusting were they in his wisdom, so confident in his concern and willingness to help. Today, as a teacher and coach at Euclid High School, he continues the same generous service as friend, sounding board, and role model. He brings that same care and commitment to his family — wife Pattie and sons Tom ’85 and Tim ’88 — and to all who are privileged to call him a friend.

In his career at Lake Catholic, Tom’s giftedness in education extended beyond the students he taught and even further beyond the content of social studies that is his field. His enthusiasm for education and his incredible ability to breathe new life and creativity into age-old subject matter amazed and inspired his colleagues. And in his classes, students learned more than history or government; they learned about life, about living fully and well. As teacher and coach, Tom Banc helped form the minds and spirits of many Lake Catholic students. His influence on them — and on that fledgling Lake Catholic community — will continue throughout the years to come.

Mary Lou and Jim Beers

May 1995

Inspirational is an apt description of Mary Lou and Jim Beers. Yet in all likelihood, they would shy away from that designation, preferring to identify themselves as people richly blessed by God. For years they have served as heralds of Good News and as powerful witnesses of joy and unwavering faith. Their ministry has taken them to school and parish communities throughout the diocese and beyond. As parents of five Lake Catholic alumni (Kathy ’83, Julie ’84, Amy Baca ’86, Jim ’89, and Beth ’94), Mary Lou and Jim have been frequent visitors to the school. But their most significant contribution has come through their involvement in retreats and in other Lake Catholic programs and in their continuing willingness to share their story and their lively faith with any and all who will listen.

Despite Jim’s 21-year confinement to a wheelchair and his inability to speak, Mary Lou and Jim are a powerful voice of love and commitment. Not ones to dwell on the hardships they have endured, they deal with life honestly — and humorously — and speak convincingly about how God has blessed them. Surely their commitment to each other, to their family, and to their God offers unparalleled witness to joyful and faith-filled living and loving. They have touched and enriched the Lake Catholic High School community and the entire Church of Cleveland.

Michele (Zicari) Bernot ('78)

October 2010

Since the time that she became a daily fixture as a faculty member in the religion department, Michele has embodied the core values of Lake Catholic through her generosity and willingness to go beyond the call of duty for the Cougar community. Her dedication to the school and students is evident in her actions and the many additional hours she puts in. Her vocation reaches far beyond the walls of Lake Catholic as she has also given a piece of her time and heart to St. Malachi’s Back Door Ministry, St. Augustine, West Side Catholic Center, Catholic Charities, and Hospice of the Western Reserve, to name a few.

As the school’s Campus Minister, Michele expanded the scope of the school’s ministries and service outreach, forging new relationships with community organizations and providing students with the opportunities to learn the life-long value of serving others. Her compassion is exemplified by her commitment to students who seek guidance and value her judgment, and her kindness is apparent in her rapport with coworkers and peers. Mrs. Bernot’s door is always open, and she is ever-willing to drop everything to lend an ear, help a person in need, or display the selflessness for which she is so well known.

A colleague, counselor, educator, ambassador, and friend who exhibits the best that Lake Catholic has to offer, Michele is a shining example of Lake Catholic’s mission and values. This proud Cougar alumnus entered Lake Catholic in 1974 to learn and graduated in 1978 to serve, and has been doing so ever since.

Jackie and Ron Bixel

April 1993

In a time where divorce and single-parent homes are more and more commonplace, it is refreshing to meet a couple that emanates the true meaning of marriage and family values. Jackie and Ron Bixel have successfully raised five children to be positive members of society, stressing the importance of service, commitment, and caring. They have continued to be very involved in their children’s lives, Lake Catholic, their community, and their faith. The two are examples of how unselfish generosity, integrity, and Christian values directly relate to a full and successful life.

Over the years, both Jackie and Ron have proven themselves as staunch ambassadors of the entire LC community. They were active members of the Lake Catholic Parents Association for many years, three of which Ron served as President. As committee members and co-chairpersons, they worked diligently to make five Grand Auctions highly successful. The proceeds from these fundraisers helped to completely renovate the auditorium and computer centers. The couple helped to organize four After-Prom celebrations, giving both parent volunteers and students a fun-filled early morning party following the dance. Jackie was also a four-year member of the Academic Council. They both recruited many families, former parents, and alumni to volunteer at different events over the years.

The couple has five children: Rory Lough ’87, Jean ’88, Patrick ’89, Melanie ’91, and Molly ’97. Jackie and Ron have always been supportive of their children’s activities and were fixtures at LC sporting events and student government activities. Ron also coached softball in Mentor, and Jackie coached t-ball for many years. Residents of Mentor, Jackie and Ron are parishioners at St. John Vianney Church, have taught in the church’s PSR program for many years, and are eucharistic ministers. They have become examples of loving Christians to their children and those they have taught and coached.

Jackie and Ron are true partners in life. Their love has allowed them to be models of cooperation, teamwork, honesty, and unselfishness. They both work at The Bixel Organization, a life and health insurance and investment company Ron began and is now President. Ron is also on the advisory committee for New England Life Insurance.

Dr. John Brems

June 2005

One of the most precious gifts a person can give is their time and talents. Dr. John Brems, a longtime supporter of Lake Catholic, is someone who does just that. He has been involved with Lake Catholic since 1990 as the Cougar Football Team’s doctor.

Dr. Brems works his magic on the sidelines, taking care of our athletes and keeping them healthy so each can lead Lake Catholic to great achievements on the field. But his ability to treat and guide individuals does not stop with his superior medical training. Dr. Brems’ deep care and concern for the student athletes, their parents, and members of the entire Lake Catholic community, is what has made him stand out as a man of great character and esteem in the eyes of those who know him – his Cougar family.

Dr. Brems is a role model and inspiration to so many throughout the community of Lake Catholic, the city of Mentor, Lake County, Northeast Ohio, and beyond. He is a committed and dedicated doctor, man, husband, father of four Lake Catholic graduates, and dear friend who goes out of his way for anyone in need. Time and time again, Dr. Brems shows those around him how his medical knowledge can work with his faith in God to touch the lives of those in need. His is a gentle force that works behind the scenes to make a difference, and he prefers it to be that way. While his leadership style is subdued, the mark that he makes on his Cougar family is not. Dr. Brems is an example of commitment to excellence and a willingness to serve others every day. We are blessed to have him as an important and intricate part of our community.

Mark W. Connelly ('77)

April 1990

During his four years at Lake Catholic, Mark was twice the recipient of a Christian Witness Award, awarded an Academic Excellence Award three years, a member of the National Honor Society and the 4-H Club, and was named to Who’s Who Among High School Students. He was a four-year member of the varsity wrestling team and earned the Most Valuable Wrestler Award for two years.

Since graduating from Michigan State University in 1981, Mark has spent many hours helping others in the community. He founded the wrestling program at St. Mary of the Assumption School and coached there for five years. He is also a Eucharistic minister and teaches PSR at St. Gabriel Church.

Mark is currently a manager at Progressive Insurance. He and his wife Caroline (Clement), a 1980 alumnae, have two children and live in Painesville.

Thomas J. Connelly

October 2010

It’s not often that Lake Catholic High School gets the opportunity to honor one of its “Founding Fathers”. After serving as Co-Chairman of the original fundraising drive in 1966–67 to establish and build the school, Tom Connelly is respected as a true patriarch. This passionate proponent of Catholic education has remained an active member of the Cougar Community while performing the roles of President of the LC Parents Association (1974–75), charter member of the Cougar Wrestling Club, long-time caller for the Bingo program, participant in the Strategic Planning process, and avid sports booster for more than 35 years!

Always leading by example that volunteerism is a way of life, Mr. Connelly has given his time, talents, and treasure for the greater good of others by devoting time to the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Junior Achievement, to name but two. He made a big difference in the LC wrestling program by acting as official statistician (1973–80), training Mat Aids, serving as head table official for Ohio Catholic Championship tournaments, and running the Division II Northeast Ohio Sectionals at Lake since 2002.

Tom and wife Dorothy have perpetuated their faith by sending all six children through Catholic schools, including Lake Catholic graduates Jean and Joan (’75), Mark (’77), Tim (’80), and Kelly (’86). In addition, three more Cougar alumni have married into the family, and the Connellys have enjoyed witnessing seven grandchildren grace the halls of LC. His genuine love and dedication to the school’s Core Values are very evident, and these ideals distinguish this outstanding individual.

Ralph Day

April 1993

Ralph Day took his penchant for hard work, built a stable life for his own family, and continues to give generously to those he cares about in the community. He has proven himself over and over as a kind, friendly, and concerned family man.

He worked two full-time jobs to ensure his family had the right type of educational and spiritual background. He and his wife, Kathy, strongly support Catholic education and sent their four daughters, Debbie Berley ’80, Colleen ’81, Katie ’83, and Cindi ’86, through parochial schools from kindergarten through high school.

Ralph had the unique talent of staying involved in the growth of his daughters as well as positively contributing to the growth of hundreds of other Lake Catholic students. Ralph was one of the “founding fathers” of the highly successful Cougar Wrestling Club. He served as President and furthered the program’s growth by contributing personal work hours as an electrician and carpenter to make the facilities better. He helped raise money, organize and run tournaments, and became a surrogate father to literally hundreds of LC athletes.

Long after his daughters graduated, Ralph continued to volunteer at Lake Catholic. As a member of the construction committee from its initial stages, he was instrumental in making the auxiliary gymnasium and wrestling room a reality. He has also done advisory work at the school and completed the wiring in the industrial arts building. He can still be seen at LC events supporting the staff, teams, and coaches.

His contributions of labor and time extend far beyond the LC family. He has helped to improve the facilities at Gilmour Academy and St. Felicitas and recently completed extensive electrical work for Stella Maris, an alcohol rehabilitation center for indigent men. He is a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association and serves as a board member for the health and welfare board of the I.B.E.W. #38. Ralph was also an assistant coach for the Mentor Big Red traveling softball team and currently coaches girls softball at Garfield Park.

He founded Day Electric Company Inc. in 1987 and continues to lead the multi-million dollar business.

Ralph is a Christian man dedicated to his family, his work, Lake Catholic, and his community. Always modest about the impact he has made on his family and others, he is a wonderful example of love and unselfish generosity. He is a parishioner at St. Mary of the Assumption Church and lives in Mentor.

Jim Delli

May 1992

Jim Delli began volunteering at Lake Catholic when his eldest daughter was a freshman in the fall of 1983. Almost a decade has passed and three daughters have graduated, yet he is still a valuable fixture around the school.

This hard working man has worn many hats over that time period. He has served as President of the Executive Athletic Boosters for many years. In that capacity, he has selflessly assisted with several fundraisers including Monte Carlo nights, reverse raffles, and the Fall Festival.

Jim was instrumental in the establishment of the concession stand at school and continues to maintain and coordinate all concession activities at home games, CYO games, and special events.

He also volunteers at Bingo and with the Grand Auction committee. He was the previous announcer at home football games and is currently football equipment manager.

His overwhelming generosity extends to his parish, St. Mary of the Assumption in Mentor. A member of the annual summer festival committee, Jim serves as co-chairman of the car raffle, funnel cake booth chairperson, and he assists with preliminary electrical work and set-up. He is a member of the St. Mary Men’s Club, helps decorate the church during holiday seasons, and has been assistant coach for two St. Mary’s girls basketball teams.

Jim has also volunteered at the Mentor High School PTSA Circus.

Jim and his wife, Betty, have lived in Mentor throughout the course of their 26 year marriage. They have four daughters: Pam ’87, Annemarie ’88, Michelle ’90, and Laura ’98.

Michael Denk ('83)

March 2025

Mike Denk ('83) is a dedicated member of the Lake Catholic community with a passion for supporting both academics and athletics. Over the years, Mike has played a key role in enhancing the school experience for students and families alike.

As a prominent figure in the school’s athletic department, Mike became well-known for announcing both football and basketball games, bringing energy and enthusiasm to each event. His voice became synonymous with school spirit, rallying fans and creating an energetic atmosphere at games.

In addition to contributing to the athletic aspect of the school, Mike was instrumental in leading the 2025 strategic planning process aimed at improving the school’s operations and growth. Through thoughtful leadership, Mike worked collaboratively with administration and faculty to develop a clear roadmap for Lake Catholic’s future.

Mike, as a 1983 Class Ambassador, played a vital role in the school's fundraising initiatives, helping to raise essential funds to support programs and resources. This commitment to the school extended to a personal level as well—Mike and wife Regina, proudly sent two daughters to Lake Catholic, demonstrating their belief in the institution’s mission and its impact on young lives.

Through years of service and dedication, Mike has made a lasting mark on the school, ensuring that future generations benefit from the opportunities that are important to his own family.

Michael DeSantis

March 2025

Mike has had ties to Lake Catholic since the day it opened its doors in 1970. His mother was a secretary in the main office and his sister was in the first graduating class. He started teaching at Lake Catholic in 1976 and enjoyed the next 45 years of his life there as he grew as a person because of his involvement in many activities at the school.

He was a Business Education teacher for the entire time, teaching such subjects as Typing, Accounting, Computers, Personal Finance and others. He was a very active member of the Retreat Program in the late 70’s and early 80’s, participating in more than 50 retreats. His dedication to the retreat program was recognized by receiving the Christian Witness Award. He also was a moderator for a variety of clubs and activities during his time at the school.

Athletics played a very important role in his development as a person as he worked with many different teams, coaches, and students over this time. The highlight was coaching the girls basketball team to the State Final Four in 1984 - the first in program history.

His wonderful teaching career at Lake Catholic ended in May of 2021 as he left the building on the last day of school with his wife and three children, Lake Catholic graduates, at his side.

Gerard T. Dwyer

May 1992

Dedicated to Catholic education for 35 years, Gerry Dwyer is a model of the values it holds dear: patience, kindness, cooperation, love, and concern for others. Since the fall of 1975, he has touched the lives of his students and colleagues at Lake Catholic.

Currently, the chairperson of the mathematics department, Gerry has given much to all those he encounters. He received an Outstanding Teacher Award from the Diocese of Cleveland in 1991 in recognition of his exemplary work in Catholic education. His commitment to his faith is evident in the promotion of Christian values in the classroom, his outstanding service to the school, and his positive approach to life. He demands respect in his class and has an uncanny ability to motivate students of all levels. His sense of humor is a consistent morale booster for the students and his co-workers.

Gerry has directed all school fundraising activities, including the candy and coupon book drives, since 1977. He is also the faculty representative on the Parents Association and is a member of the Academic Council.

Previously, Gerry was chairman of the music department at St. Joseph High School. His love for music and performing prompted him to start the Mount Carmel Players in 1971. He was the director for five years. He also formed the non-profit corporation, Shore Center for the Arts, and was chairman of the board, producer, and director.

Originally from Long Island, New York, Gerry holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Dayton and a master of science degree in music education from Case Western Reserve University. An exceptional role model professionally, he is equally as outstanding as a husband and father. His devotion to family is evident in all aspects of his life. Gerry and his wife, Lori, have four children: Julie, Kevin, Tommy, and Lindy. The family lives in Wickliffe and are members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish.

Jeanne M. (Wybrecht) Ebner ('77)

March 2024

Since graduating in 1977, Jeanne has lived a life of humble service that personifies the core values of Lake Catholic. She returned to the school as a teacher in 1993, where her commitment and dedication to the school and its students remained unfailing for nearly 30 years.

As a Spanish teacher and later as the World Language Department Chairperson, she prepared thousands of students for a changing world with the tools not only to learn and understand a second language but also to respect and appreciate different cultures around the world.

Jeanne’s commitment to the core values of respect and compassion was perhaps best on display in her tireless efforts with the Diversity Club and Diversity Day. Her personal integrity demanded that all people be treated with love and respect, but also that no shortcuts be taken in class, and always be honest, no matter what.

Jeanne would be the last person to believe she deserves this recognition – which is exactly why she deserves it. She touched thousands of students across 30 years, and is a deserving representative of the quiet, humble, dedicated teachers that so often go unnoticed, but who in reality make Lake Catholic what it is.

Robert Grgic

June 1999

A gentle, self-effacing man, Bob Grgic embodies what he teaches — prayer and Christian leadership. His life is solidly grounded in faith and bolstered by the love of God manifest in the people and events about him. In him, students find not only an inspiring teacher but also a friend and confidant and animator of heart and spirit. Likewise, parents and colleagues recognize him as a spiritual leader and guide, one who accomplishes the extraordinary in the realm of ordinary days and happenings.

Under Bob’s direction, Lake Catholic’s retreat program has grown and flourished. His popular outdoor retreats provide inspiration and spiritual insight, leading students to discover the Holy in nature, in one another, and in themselves. And the monthly prayer gathering he coordinates continues to enrich and strengthen the entire Cougar family.

Bob’s ministry is clearly an extension of his person and of all he cherishes and celebrates, including Debbie, his wife of 18 years, and their children Katie, Daniel, and Nicole. They are the love of his life, his greatest inspiration, and support. Beyond family and career, Bob also lends his time and talent to assist his St. Mary, Painesville, parish community.

As a creative and dynamic educator, Bob teaches his students about faith; as a model of Christian discipleship, he shows them. Simply stated, Bob Grgic is a master of faith in action.

Bruce Jarosz

September 2002

A gentle, unassuming man, Bruce Jarosz quietly embodies what Lake Catholic High School stands for on a daily basis. Bruce couples his dedication and deep love of Lake Catholic with his firm belief in Christian values and unwavering faith.

Bruce lends his continual support and expertise to the school whenever asked – and without being asked. His presence at Lake Catholic often goes unnoticed, yet the impact he makes on the school’s overall operation is astounding. Through his work on the school’s Endowment Board and Finance Committees, Bruce lends his knowledge to LC’s most vital functions. In an unobtrusive manner, Bruce guides school administration to operate efficiently and thoughtfully.

As a loving parent of three daughters and husband to LC religion teacher Debbie of 28 years, Bruce’s inspiration to assist and direct others stems from the encouragement he receives from his family. In addition to his family, career as Chief Financial Officer at M.F. Cachat Co. in Cleveland, and volunteer duties at Lake Catholic, Bruce has also given countless hours of guidance and support to All Saints School and his parish, St. John Vianney in Mentor.

A humble role model, insightful confidant, respected consultant, and genuine friend, Bruce Jarosz’s gentle manner has clearly impacted the Lake Catholic community for years to come.

Tom Kerr

April 1990

In 1973, Tom began what was to become one of the finest bingo programs in Lake County. The Lake Catholic Bingo Program has earned nearly two million dollars to date, which subsidizes tuition by at least $250 per student. Tom has actively run this program since its start. Without his extreme dedication and leadership, the biweekly program would have ceased long ago. It is through his many hours of long, hard work that he has earned the title, “Mr. Bingo.”

Tom was also very active as a softball coach at Mentor Recreation Park and was instrumental in the establishment of the tournament games that are still being held at Mentor Garfield Park.

Tom has worked with Ohio Bell/Ameritech for several years and is currently a manager in the Cleveland office. He and his wife, Rosie, have four daughters: Kathy ’74, Jean ’77, Julie ’81, and Kristi ’91.

Sr. Patricia Kukwa

June 2007

Everyone who passes through Cougar Country is greeted with the message: “Enter to Learn, Exit to Serve.” Sr. Patricia is the unheralded champion of the former and a perfect living example of the latter. It is not always easy being the second in command, but this humble servant has done so with amazing grace as part of Sister St. Ann’s Administrative Team.

Possibly the most significant contribution Sr. Patricia has made to the Lake Catholic Community lies in her lifelong passion for advancing the educational experience for all students. Whether spearheading teacher development or offering her insights when reviewing curriculum standards, Sister has always dedicated her efforts to promoting academic excellence. Her attention to detail is infamous, yet she is best known for a quick smile and an infectious laugh. Sr. Patricia has always had an open-door policy, and her kind demeanor makes her a genuine joy to work with.

As Assistant Principal at Lake Catholic since the mid 1980s, Sr. Patricia has graciously toiled in the shadows of others, and for that we are forever grateful!

Sr. Merica Madigan, O.S.U.

April 1993

For an entire decade, Sr. Mercia Madigan, O.S.U. walked the halls of Lake Catholic as a teacher, department chairperson, volunteer, counselor, and friend. Although she left the school in 1992, her quiet influence can still be felt by colleagues, students, and alumni.

As a teacher, Sr. Mercia encouraged students to strive to reach their potential in all classes and assisted them with enriching their lives through service, reflection, and leadership. She had the charisma to teach, inspire, and guide all types. Her openness and honesty in class helped to build a strong rapport with her students. Her sincere compassion kept that bond healthy.

Sr. Mercia spent many hours counseling students. To them, she was someone with whom they could be completely honest. She had a gentle and caring way of sharing insights that were not threatening, but challenging. Many commented on her ability to intently listen and offer advice even if she did not agree with a particular point of view. She was consistently patient and understanding.

A mediator with both staff and students, she combined her spunky attitude with a peaceful gentleness. She always had a positive thing to say, was willing to help, and was a true friend to all.

She worked with the students to plan several very successful Homecoming celebrations and helped with many retreats. She also served on the Academic Council for many years.

Her family means a great deal to her and she credits God for allowing her to enjoy a very full and rewarding life. She emulates Jesus’ true nature and gives all a fantastic example of loving service to God.

Previously, Sr. Mercia taught at St. Ann and St. Mary of the Assumption Schools, and Villa Angela High School. She also worked closely with Ursuline formation, assisting younger novices with their religious preparation.

She continues to work on retreats for the Ursuline community and St. Mary Magdalene Church in Willowick. A model of commitment to Catholic education and a gentle bearer of the faith, Sr. Mercia is still influencing the development of children at St. Mary Magdalene. She is currently a member of the five-person pastoral team as Director of Religious Education. She oversees all sacramental programs and religious education at the school and PSR program. Since she is such a caring and committed religious woman, she makes a ministering Church a true reality.

Lisa (Rozzo) Marcopoli (’84)

May 1997

As a student and as Director of Development and Alumni, Lisa Rozzo Marcopoli ’84 has been Lake Catholic’s most avid cheerleader. In her love for the school and unbounded pride in being part of the Cougar family, Lisa continues to be a walking advertisement for her alma mater. She is, at the same time, a striking example of what a loving family and quality education can produce: a woman of principle, integrity, and Christian values, possessed of an infectious smile and enthusiastic spirit, who always demonstrates inexhaustible energy and a willingness to go the extra mile — or ten. The same spirit and values that have characterized her family and career involvement undoubtedly will continue to enhance her marriage and family life with Vince ’82.

During her seven-year tenure as Director of Development and Alumni, Lisa established a number of new activities, including the Broadmoor Christmas party and the Alumni Basketball Tournament. Despite the rigors and time constraints of her job and professional involvement, Lisa also managed to find time for a group very dear to her heart - the cheerleaders. These students and all who worked with Lisa in the myriad activities she coordinated found in her a mentor and confidante. Indeed, all who served with her discovered a capable leader, a willing helper, and a generous friend.

Lisa Rozzo Marcopoli is the personification of the Lake Catholic spirit: bright, enthusiastic, and totally committed. Although she has moved beyond these hallowed halls, those of us privileged to know her as student, colleague, mentor, and friend can embrace her forever as one of our own and as one of the best and brightest in Lake Catholic history.

Paul Melison

June 1999

As friends go, Paul Melison is one of the best Lake Catholic has ever known. He is a kind and generous man, unwavering in his commitment to youth and tireless in efforts on their behalf, particularly on the Cougar sports scene. An enthusiastic fan and booster, Paul is quick to volunteer his time, energy, and talents to support one of the many Lake Catholic functions taking place at any given time.

Paul is a role model for our students, and his dedication to Lake Catholic has been consistently evident since the 1980s, and is especially apparent in his love of and dedication to the Cougar Football and Basketball Programs. He attends sporting events regularly, and his cheers are shouts of support and encouragement for both the players and coaches.

Paul is the owner of New Image Hair Cutters in Willowick. His business is a place where many of our students go to not only get a haircut, but also to talk sports and hear motivating words and receive reassurance. Paul and his wife, Beverly, have one daughter, Kristen ’91. The Melisons live in Mentor and are members of St. John Vianney parish.

Generous. Committed. Willing to serve. These aptly describe Paul Melison, one of Lake Catholic’s greatest friends and treasures.

John P. Paglio

April 1993

There are people who come into our lives and touch our hearts in such a way that we could never be the same. John P. Paglio was such a man. The impact he made on the lives of so many at Lake Catholic was clearly visible in the tremendous show of support at his untimely death on May 5, 1992.

The generous care and sensitivity with which John reached out to young people was an immeasurable gift to the entire LC community. John believed a youth’s life could be enriched through participation in sports and that athletics were essential to developing a good attitude, discipline, and teamwork. He challenged students to develop their God-given talents and to strive for success on or off the football field or wrestling mat. Over the years, John was a strong support to the coaches and teachers as well.

Even after his three children graduated, John continued to be a familiar sight around the school and at athletic events. He was not there to “coach,” but to encourage, support, and lend a helping hand. He would take photos and videos, give advice, and cheer the teams to victory. His laughter and sense of humor were always welcome additions to any day.

Although an accomplished athlete himself, it was not only the athletes whom he affected. He became a confidant to many students who sought his advice on college and career choices or just needed a concerned shoulder to lean against. He was able to point things out without adversely affecting a person’s ego and always found a positive way to motivate someone. John was truly an inspiration and a hero to many.

John’s family was extremely important to him. His wife, Diane, and three children, Jon ’88, Jill ’89, and Dean ’91, did have to “share” him with his extended family at Lake Catholic; however, he loved them deeply and was very proud and supportive of all their endeavors.

With his sales background, John was always able to persuade others to volunteer to help Lake Catholic, donate items, buy raffle tickets, or help with athletic booster fundraisers. He was the owner and operator of Mid Atlantic Representatives.

John was also a part of the planning committee for the auxiliary gymnasium and wrestling room. He coached CYO wrestling at Catholic schools for many years and was a parishioner at St. Bede the Venerable Church in Mentor.

The loss of this “gentle giant” last year was greatly felt by all and his love will always be fondly remembered.

Sr. Diane Pinchot, O.S.U.

May 1991

As a member of the first faculty at Lake Catholic, Sr. Diane (formerly Sr. M. Fidelis, O.S.U.) accepted the challenge of organizing the art department curriculum and quickly turned the program into one of the best offered at the school. She was also a religion teacher and an integral member of the first retreat team. Although she left Lake Catholic after the 1974-75 school year, two important legacies that will remain as long as the school exists can be attributed to Sr. Diane. She designed the school seal and the school ring. They both are symbols that best exemplify the spirit and tradition of Lake Catholic. The sign on the front lawn and the artwork on official Lake Catholic letterhead are also designs of hers.

Sr. Diane was a main contributor to the spirit of Lake Catholic in the early years. She was a Christian witness to the students and was a model of hope and patience. Her enthusiasm, devotion, and unwavering trust in God were an inspiration for all.

Sr. Diane is currently the chairperson of Ursuline College’s art department. She designed the chapel at the college and helped to renovate St. Peter’s Church in Cleveland. Her artwork is influenced by her religious beliefs and she exhibits her pieces quite often in the Northeast Ohio area.

Fr. Marty Polito

May 1992

Fr. Marty Polito has enriched the lives of each member of the Lake Catholic community over the course of the six years he has served as Spiritual Director. Not only has he been the principal director of religious formation, but he has also been a sincere friend, counselor, and confidant to the students, faculty, and families at Lake Catholic.

He has provided many spiritual growth opportunities for the students by encouraging them to expand their knowledge and practice of their faith. Coordinating overnight retreats, days of recollection, service projects, liturgical celebrations, and prayer services, Fr. Marty offers natural extensions of the daily religious curriculum.

Fr. Marty has been an integral member of the team that promotes Lake Catholic to prospective students and parents at open houses, high school nights, and visitation days. His openness, sense of humor, and creativity instantly put new families at ease and allowed them to understand the endearing qualities of the school he loves.

As important as these special projects are, it is his daily communications that have the most influence on the Lake Catholic family. Fr. Marty’s gentle, loving, yet direct nature is the perfect model of the Christian values he teaches. He is the first one to offer support, encouragement, and advice, and he continually challenges the students to reach for their potential regardless of the area.

A graduate of St. Joseph High School, Borromeo Seminary College, and St. Mary’s Seminary, this selfless man gives generously of his time outside Lake Catholic as well. He resides at Holy Redeemer Church in Cleveland and assists with various responsibilities at the parish. He participates in adult and student retreats, helps with confirmation preparations, mass celebrations, and confessions at most of the local parishes. Fr. Marty is also the supervisor for several students from St. Mary Seminary and is involved with monthly scripture studies and faith sharings at the Lake County Juvenile Detention Hall.

James E. Simonis

April 1990

As the first principal of Lake Catholic, Jim laid the foundation for what the school is today. In 1970, he faced the tremendous challenge of starting the first coeducational Catholic high school in Lake County. Under his leadership, dedication, confidence, and extreme enthusiasm, the school’s identity was forged. Jim was the driving force behind the academic excellence and strong Christian values that the students and school were striving toward during his six years as principal.

Since 1958, Jim has been involved in Catholic education. After teaching sixth grade at Our Lady of Good Counsel, he moved to St. Joseph High School, where he taught Spanish and Social Studies. He was Assistant Principal for two years before coming to Lake Catholic. He served as Principal for six years. At that time, he returned to St. Joseph as Principal and continued in that capacity for the following twelve years. He is currently at Chanel High School.

Jim and his wife, Sandy, have two adult children: Janet (’78) and Jamie (’83).

Sandy Simonis

June 1999

Since its opening in 1970, Sandy Simonis has been the heart of Lake Catholic. With her late husband, James E. Simonis, the school’s founding principal, Sandy planted the seeds of care and commitment that have shaped the close-knit school community. As a 19-year staff member, she continues to foster its growth through her example of tireless and enthusiastic service. In this gentle and faith-filled woman, students and staff, parents and teachers discover not only a font of information, but an inexhaustible supply of support and compassion, patience and generosity.

Sandy epitomizes professionalism and versatility. As office manager and secretary to the principal, she wears many hats and fills many roles — from schedule-keeper to party-planner, from sounding board to cheerleader — each with grace and efficiency, and a pleasant demeanor. The respect she accords each person has earned her the respect and admiration of all.

Sandy’s heartfelt dedication to Lake Catholic is an extension of her devotion to her family. The once-in-a-lifetime love she shared with Jim continues to enliven and inspire her, providing a wellspring of strength and courage. In her cherished role as mother to Janet ’78 and Jamie ’83, Sandy overflows with love and pride. She is, to her core, the very essence of motherhood and family.

Beloved colleague. Treasured friend. Loving mother. Gentle spirit. Woman of faith. Sandy Simonis is all of these and more. She is indeed the heart of Lake Catholic.

Joseph Tomba

May 1997

Joe Tomba epitomizes the very best of the Lake Catholic philosophy. He is an outstanding educator whose passion for teaching is matched by his love for students. And in this gentle and caring man, students find not only an inspiring instructor, but also a wise and understanding listener and friend who encourages them to do and become their best. The respect he accords each person, whether student or colleague, has earned him the respect and admiration of all.

A part of the Lake Catholic family since 1972, Joe has grown with the school, never settling for the status quo, but always striving to improve his teaching so as to enhance his students’ learning. Under his guidance, students lend their skills to their younger counterparts at Bellflower Elementary School through the tutoring and Young Authors projects, both Tomba-initiated programs. Joe’s efforts for Lake Catholic go far beyond his work in the classroom; the English Department chairperson has served on a variety of committees and is a regular supporter of school activities.

While teaching is his passion, the real love of Joe Tomba’s life is his family — wife Debbie, and daughters Abbie ’93, Cassie ’94, and Amanda ’98. His devotion to them and his pride in them are apparent to all. He is, first and foremost, a great family man.

Dynamic educator, trusted confidante, esteemed colleague, devoted husband and father, and man of faith. These aptly describe Joe Tomba, a Lake Catholic treasure.

Sister St. Ann Waldron

June 2007

“Once a Cougar, always a Cougar” was a favorite saying of Sister St. Ann. This simple motto suggests so many desirable qualities: loyalty, integrity, long-term dedication, and an unwavering understanding and passion for the school’s Mission Statement. What better way to also sum up the many years of honorable service from this Hall of Excellence recipient?

After joining the Lake Catholic Administrative Team in 1982, Sister St. Ann became Principal in 1989 and ministered to the school for an impressive 17 years until pursuing a new mission to serve Christ and society in 2006. Under her leadership, Lake Catholic integrated the onslaught of computer technology into curriculum and operating procedures, developed a Crisis Management Plan, implemented a formal Strategic Planning process, established an Endowment Fund and Board, won a number of State Championships in athletics, and expanded spiritual, academic, and extracurricular growth opportunities for over 4000 students.

Sister St. Ann led by example and never asked anyone to do anything she would not do herself. She took great pride in the school’s clean appearance and defended its reputation with passion. Sister was ever mindful of the whole student and worked tirelessly to provide an environment that fosters a commitment to excellence, a spirit of respect and compassion, personal integrity, and a willingness to serve others.

Thank you, Sister St. Ann, for your unmatched years of service to Lake Catholic. Wherever life’s ministries take you, you will always be a Cougar in our hearts!

Tom Ward

April 1990

Since the school’s inception in 1970, Tom has dedicated his time and service to the Lake Catholic community. During his tenure at the school, Tom has worn many hats. He was the school’s first Athletic Director, first football coach, first wrestling coach, and first Assistant Principal. Tom also taught Health and Physical Education and was an assistant track coach. His 1974-75 Cougar football team was 10-0, the school’s only undefeated season as of yet.

Tom is presently an administrator at Lake Catholic and serves as Dean of Students. His reputation as a fair, patient, and consistent disciplinarian has made him an excellent role model for all the students.

A graduate of Cathedral Latin, Tom continued his education at John Carroll University and received his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Case Western Reserve University. He has been involved in Catholic education since 1964.

Tom and his wife, Maggie, have five children: Michele, Tom ’88, Sean ’89, Katie ’91, and Kevin ’94.

Judge William W. Weaver

March 2024

Bill Weaver’s involvement at Lake Catholic went well beyond being the father of six alumni.

A man of deep faith, Bill gave much of his time to Lake Catholic, even after all of his children graduated. He served on the school’s Advisory Board, was of special counsel to Sister Saint Anne, offered legal counsel to the school, helped start the wrestling team’s booster club, was an annual guest speaker for both students and parents and even allowed students shadow opportunities outside of school. An avid fan of Lake Catholic extracurriculars, Bill attended as many sporting events, plays, and fundraisers as he could fit into his schedule. Through his firm Catholic faith and values, Bill exemplified everything Lake Catholic stands for.

Outside of his own family, Bill was also a father figure to many of the youth of Lake County. As a juvenile judge for 18 years, he strove to guide kids through their struggles and offer them second chances by developing rehabilitation programs that far outlasted his time on the bench. Spending every Thanksgiving and Christmas morning in the detention center was a norm for Bill and his wife of 63 years, Reba, as a way to show kids that he believed in them. Demonstrating his faith, he lived by the mantra, “Life is fragile; handle with prayer.”

Fr. David Woost

September 2002

When Lake Catholic is in need of a friend, teacher, counselor, confidant, protector, leader, and one to provide religious guidance, we look no further than Fr. Dave. He is the one who holds our Cougar family together with spiritual cohesiveness through the good and challenging times. His love of God is evident through all he says and does to unite students, faculty, parents and our entire community through the Lord’s grace.

Fr. Dave is a dedicated, compassionate and responsible representative of Lake Catholic’s core values, whether in the classroom, in the chapel, on the basketball court, leading a retreat, at a football game, visiting the sick, or presiding at school liturgies. As our spiritual leader, he gives of himself constantly and without reservation and has enriched the lives of the entire Cougar community over the six years that he has served Lake Catholic.

School liturgies and prayer services flourish with creativity and distinctiveness under Fr. Dave’s direction. His perceptive use of spontaneity leads our community to be inspired and filled with a better understanding of spirituality and God. Fr. Dave is a master at leading students in the ministry of our faith and nurturing their abilities so that services are an extension of their love of God brought forth to the entire community.

Raised in a family rooted deep in faith, Fr. Dave shares that faith as an exemplar of Christian leadership with the entire Lake Catholic Community.
